Roughly 60% of grocery store coffee isn’t 100% Arabica. It’s blended with Robusta beans, a cheaper and harsher variety used to cut costs at the expense of flavor.

If you’ve read our story, you know I spent a decade working in the coffee industry.

Several of the roasters I worked for were part of this statistic. They started blending in Robusta to improve margins and unsurprisingly, customer complaints followed. People said the coffee tasted like peanuts and metal (pennies).

But there weren’t enough subscription cancellations for the venture capital ownership to change course. Instead of improving the coffee, we roasted darker and added artificial flavoring to cover up the problem.

That experience showed me exactly what happens when the bottom line matters more than your values.
